Ellis Krauss, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus of Japanese Politics
UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy
Dr. Krauss is one of the world's leading experts on Japanese politics and U.S.-Japan relations. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and joined UCSD GPS in 1995.
Achievements
- Received the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan (2018)
- Author of 10+ books on Japanese politics and diplomacy
- Published 100+ academic papers
- NSF grant recipient for electoral reform research

Ulrike Schaede, Ph.D.
Professor of Japanese Business, Director of JFIT
UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy
Dr. Schaede is the founding director of the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT) at UCSD. She holds a Ph.D. in Japan Studies and Economics from Germany and is fluent in Japanese.
Achievements
- Author of 'The Business Reinvention of Japan' (Stanford UP, 2020)
- Winner of the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize (2021)
- 8+ years of research in Japan
- Visiting scholar at Bank of Japan and METI

Phillip Hwang, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus of Counseling Psychology
University of San Diego
Dr. Hwang holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Massachusetts. He served 25+ years at USD in various academic and administrative roles.

Glenn C. Smith, J.D.
Professor of Law
California Western School of Law
Professor Smith earned his J.D. from NYU and LL.M. from Georgetown. He developed a nationally-recognized seminar where students role-play as attorneys before actual judges.

- Former counsel to U.S. Senate committee
